Finally I was glad to just be accessing websites and to find out that I didn't have to download anything for this task.
1) Firstly I opened up the webpage http://computer.howstuffworks.com/router5.htm and found out all about "traceroute". It helped explain a little more compared to what I already knew.
2) I then went to http://centralips.net/co/ and tracerouted from there to curtin. I ended up finding out that there were 20 hops and that when i "pinged" Curtin the average time in milliseconds from the tools site to the curtin server is 249. It was also easy to figure out from the results that the IP number of the hostname curtin.edu.au was 134.7.179.53

Trace complete
PING:-
1) I finally decided to downloaded the A-Tool bar from http:// www.tucows.com/preview/323577 .
2) After downloaded I pinged the webct site which took an average of 65ms. Compared to the time with the time taken to ping from the net tools site of 149ms, evidently it was concluded that this was greatly reduced.
3) Ultimately I did think it would be less and after when i discovered it was considerably less because the servers used would just have to transmit the message across Australia (Sydney to Perth). As opposed to before where the initial location was in the USA. The time it takes is still very fast however The distance travelled and the number of servers it takes to transmit the information packets will dictate the time it takes.
Never using a Traceroute or ping before or even knowing what they were I thought this task would be hard. However I found that all I had to do was follow the instructions properly and I would obtain the correct answers.

MODULE 1: FTP task
Like most excercises in this subject so far i was vaguely familiar with ftp clients and found the task quite daunting at first as i wasnt sure how to go about attacking it the right way.
1) I began by logging onto www.ftpplanet.com/download.htm> and downloading WS-FTP Home and installed the program once it was complete.
2) I eventually logged on and ftp'd to recall.curtin.edu.au and chose anonymous login. This bit i found quite easy to do.
3) Once accessed I looked at the directory structure as stated in the task and found the README file which i proceeded to download.
4) Once this was downloaded I was able to answer the question and fill in the blank word: "according to the readme file, 'CAPITALIZATION MATTERS' ". Needless to say because i was very in-experienced with FTP I was very glad to get a result.
I found this task quite helpful in developing my ftp skills as I have only ever used the program once before as my brother needed help sending big files of photos to a magazine and that is how you are suppose to send big files through to the magazines editor. Anyway now I can help him out with using FTP.

MODULE 1: Task B
Using Telnet to visit blinkenlights Star Wars epic.
1) This was so entertaining, funny and creative I really enjoyed seeing telnet in a different light. It reminded me of doing little flick books with stick figures running around in primary school. It again made me reminisce of the lack of technology among computers back in the past and how far they have progressed over the years. It was so detailed all the coding and i assume would have been quite time consuming to create. Every little bit of coding and data would have had to be spot on to not only make it work but to design all the settings and characters themselves. Very entertaining.

MODULE 1:- Task A
Using Telnet to log onto the Deakin library database computer:
1) I was very new to this first module excercise and was previously not experienced with telnet at all. After going onto the discussion board some people had posted some important information which allowed me to access Telnet.
2) I realised lucky enough Telnet was already installed on my computer and entered telnet://library.deakin.edu.au/ in the browser with success.
3) I was then asked: What kind of Terminal are you using? V > VT100
W > NCSA VT100
I selected "V" and then entered "yes" that i am using a VT100 or compatible terminal.
4) This took me to the Deakin University library where I then searched via Author for "Bennahum" to find two results: 1 Bennahum David A 1936 ................................. 1 entry 2 Bennahum Ninotchka .................................... 1 entry
5) I proceeded to go to the menu and select print this title and email printer. Entered my email with a header and hit enter.
6) Finally recieved the email from ‘DEAKIN UNI LIB ftsmail@deakin.edu.au '
I was really surprised to view how typically old this technology was and how far the internet and databases in particular have come over the year. It was a very enlightening task and because I am still quite young I found it quite funny how old this kind of technology was.
